So I had the chance to get to the Celtics open practice on Sunday. Other than the free pizza and a coke I was incented with, here are a few thoughts.
Firstly, Doc Rivers takes the mic and opens up with how good it is to be a sports fan in Boston right now. A little politicking never hurts right, but as he started to say 'Go Sox' and 'How about them Patriots', I kept thinking to myself, self 'Will he really go down the line and mention the Bruins?'. As the applause for the Patriots support ended, Rivers gracefully segued into how things were going to be different this year for the Celtics. So, ultimately, no Bruins kudos. Ouch.
Glen Davis is funny Rivers announced that Big Baby would introduce everyone of his teamates to the audience. Davis takes the mic and doesn't miss a beat. He rolls down the line, like a Vegas performer calling out the lineup. Of course he forgot several teamates, including poor old Scott Pollard way down the bench trying to recover from a recent injury. Anyhow, the take-away is having Big Baby on the team will keep things light and I bet he is a fun guy to have around the locker room. He'll help the new lineup gel.
Kevin Garnett is serious about winning Yes, it was a practice in front of the crowd, but Garnett wasn't there to fool around. He looked focused, was vocal with his teammates and was aggressive about scoring. At one point, Scalabrine was on the baseline trying to inbound the ball after a timeout. Garnett was screaiming 'five seconds' at him as he took his time inbounding. Garnett as on him and it was clear he was there to play and expected others to do the same.
Ray Allen is quick. In an earlier article I analyzed the effectiveness on the stats sheet of players over the age of 32 . The stats may say one thing and we'll see as the year goes on, but this much is clear to me watching the practice. Allen may be 32, but he is quick, agile and a very good passer. I see no slow in his game.
Pierce keeps it light Paul Pierce is a highly skilled player. Yeah, I've been watching him for years, but he really looks like he can take over the play at any time. As smooth as he is, he doesn't look that motivated at times. I could be jumping the gun, but if KG's intensity rubs off on him, he'll have a great year. It would not be fun guarding him.
Depth Well, the Celts have a lot of quickness, Pruitt, Allen etc. but there is not much there afterwards. You've heard this before of course, but it is clear when you're standing there watching the whole team.
